What is Electroforming?

Behind the scenes

The Magic

Copper electroforming is when you take a copper pipe and make it into something else, like a ring or a pendant, with some crazy blue juice and a power source.

The Science

Copper electroforming is the intricate process of controlling a metal deposit of copper onto a conductive surface, whether it is an organic or inorganic material. Basically, a thick “skin” of metal is built up into a rigid surface, such as a ring.

It takes a power source, a supply of copper, an acid bath (copper sulfate pentahydrate and battery acid, basically), and other materials, which are then neutralized and made safe to touch and wear after the process is complete.

To put it simply, it’s science!

Materials & Care

The inherent nature of metal causes copper to develop a natural patina over time from exposure to the elements as well as the natural oils in the skin. We recommend that copper pieces are removed before showering, bathing and swimming, and that they are kept clean and dry. Enjoy the antiqued patina that develops over time or discourage the process by keeping jewelry clean and dry, storing it in an airtight container away from humidity and sunlight.

You can restore the luster on the surface using a treated polishing cloth, such as a Sunshine Cloth. Additionally, the luster of many raw pieces can be restored with a simple paste of lemon juice and salt. Be aware that this process may remove patina, so if there are any questions on care, please reach out to us before you proceed.

Every one of our pieces is handmade using the best materials available, and although we make every effort to ensure the colors and sizes are accurate, there may be slight variations due to the nature of the materials and the process of electroforming.
